"Meeting with Young Scientists" 22 March 2018, Bhopal
State Knowledge Management Centre on Climate Change, EPCO in association with Madhya Pradesh Council of Science and Technology (MPCoST), Bhopal organised "Meeting with Young Scientists" on 22 March 2018 at 11:00 AM in Conference Hall, EPCO Institute, Bhopal. More than 70 young scientists, research scholars and officials from different institutes of Madhya Pradesh attended the meeting.
The aim of the meeting was to discuss the challenges, avenues and opportunities related with research in the field of Environment and Climate Change with young scientists.
Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Adviser & Head, SPLICE & Climate Change Programme (CCP) along with Dr. Nisha Mendiratta, Associate Head / Scientist G, SPLICE, Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India addressed the gathering.
Dr. Gupta gave a presentation on "Climate Change - India's Research Agenda and Development Pathway" focussing on the key findings of 5th Assessment Report of IPCC such as increasing trend in Global Surface Temperatures, Sea Level Rise and Increase in Frequency and severity of Extreme Weather Events in India. He also talked about Climate Change and India's Sustainable Development Pathway to achieve environmental and economic objectives simultaneously through improving human development, sustain rapid economic growth, enhanced focus on adaptation to climate change and future development pathways to avoid emission.
Dr. Mendiratta talked about India’s strengths and weaknesses in the field of climate research. She apprised about an exponential rise in number of research institutions, supported by more than 3000 scientists having national recognition and approximately 400 scientists of international repute who are working in this field, along with 2500 young researchers. The major weaknesses in Climate Research are fragmented research, weak linkages between science and policy, limited interaction and partnership with the society.
Dr. Mendiratta informed the participants of the two national missions viz. National Mission for Sustaining the Himaliayan Eco-System (NMSHE) and National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change (NMSKCC) from among the eight national missions under National Action Plan on
Climate Change (NAPCC) are being coordinated by Department of Science and Technology. She also appraised the participants about the programmes launched under NMSKCC & NMSHE.
In the concluding session of the meeting, participants from various institutes had discussion with the eminent speakers. The meeting concluded with vote of thanks by Coordinator, SKMCCC, EPCO.
